A zarzuela with a decidedly urban character, “El barberillo de Lavapiés”, with music by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri (1823-1894) and libretto, in verse, by Luis Mariano de Larra (1830-1901) parodies Rossini’s “Barber of Seville”, both in the title and in some of the twists of its plot. Its setting, the Madrid of Charles III, becomes a living genre painting, full of “majos”, “manolos”, “chulapos” and “chisperos”. It recreates the 18th-century streets before giving way to an amusing intrigue, with plenty of lively scenes set to a score which was an instant hit on its 1874 debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela.
